Without Insight Timer, I would have never even been interested in reading that book. I’ve said in previous posts that without the book, Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics, I wouldn’t have been able to develop a different understanding of meditation that has allowed me to engage in it consistently. That’s usually not something that I find motivating but, in this case, it worked for me! There’s also a “habit tracker” component that begins rewarding you little stars for achieving certain “milestones” like ten days in a row or total days you’ve used it. The app tracks the days that you use it and tells you how many consecutive days you’ve gone. A stumbling block for some people wanting to start is thinking that they don’t have enough time. It offers about ninety percent of its content for free and offers you the remaining ten percent at a yearly price.Īs simple as it sounds, the timer that the app offers is a great tool for beginning (and continuing) a practice. When I looked into four or five other similar apps, I found they offered about ten percent of their content for free and then asked you to pay to access the other ninety percent. Perhaps the biggest thing Insight Timer has over other meditation apps is just how much it offers for free. It really helped that there is an entire category of meditations for beginners. So, I turned to Insight Timer’s guided meditations to get started. This is a preset (by you) timer that starts and stops with a sound you choose so that you can meditate without watching a clock.Īt the beginning of the year, when I started my daily meditation habit, I was intimidated to just dive in and go freestyle. The app also includes an actual meditation timer. Within those categories, you’ll find further breakdowns by level of engagement (beginner to advanced), length of time, age, and subject matter. The main types of content you can find on Insight Timer are Guided Meditations, Music, Courses (on just about anything related to mindfulness), Talks, and Yoga. Just below that, you’ll see a list of category icons that show you the many types of content that the app provides. These could be live guided meditations, music, talks, or yoga (it’s always an eclectic mix). When you open the app, you’ll see toward the top a list of any live events happening right now. Insight Timer is a mindfulness app that seeks to provide both audio and video resources for people at every stage of their journey toward actively connecting with themselves.
